INFOBUSINESS MEGA MOVIE GUIDE MULTIMEDIA CD-ROM
-----------------------------------------------
* If you notice a slow down when searching (Query) pull down the WINDOWS
menu and check if the TOC window is open. Close the TOC window when
not using it for navigation or research. To quickly close the window
change to the TOC window by clicking the TOC button on the toolbelt. Up
in the top left corner is a Control-menu box where you can click and chose
CLOSE to close the ENTIRE PROGRAM. Right below is a smaller Control-menu
box that will just close the TOC window. Click the lower Control-menu
box and chose CLOSE.
*****************************IMPORTANT********************************
* If your computer locks up after double-clicking on the Mega Movie
program icon in Windows, do the following:
1. Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file (using EDIT in DOS, Windows NOTEPAD,
or any ASCII text editor) and check for a SET TEMP line, if it
exist then check that the directory really exist by changing to it,
if there is no SET TEMP line then add the line below:
SET TEMP=C:\TEMP
(where C drive is an existing hard drive--if your drive is a
different letter, substitute that letter in step #1,#2)
2. Make a TEMP directory on your C drive:
MD C:\TEMP
3. Reboot your computer (CTRL+ALT+DEL)
4. Restart Windows and double-click on the Mega Movie Guide icon
INSTALLATION
------------
* THIS MEGA MOVIE GUIDE version is a single user copy and cannot legally be
installed for use over a network CD-ROM drive.
* If you encounter installation problems and cannot successfully complete
the install, copy the following files (found in the root directory of
THE MEGA MOVIE GUIDE CD-ROM) onto your hard drive in a subdirectory
called MEGA93 (Example: C:\MEGA93):
Example: Copy E:\MEGA93.ICO C:\MEGA93
MEGA93.ICO
MEGA93.SDW
COMMDLG.DLL
FESRVENU.DLL
FEWIN386.DLL
FEWINSRV.DLL
FOLIOBMP.DLL
CTL3D.DLL
FOLIOWMF.DLL
FOLIOTTL.DLL
OLECLI.DLL
SHELL.DLL
SMALLB.FON
SMALLE.FON
SMALLF.FON
VIP.EXE
VIPENU.DLL
VIP.INX (Rename to VIP.INI and copy into your Windows subdirectory)
Example: COPY E:\VIP.INX C:\WINDOWS\VIP.INI
Create (Using any text editor like EDIT) LNAME.INI in your Windows
subdirectory with the following lines:
[Infobase Directory]
Mega Movie Guide v2.0=<CD-ROM DRIVE LETTER>:\MEGA93.NFO
You will then need to create a program icon in Windows(TM) with the
following COMMAND LINE:
<DRIVE LETTER>:\MEGA93\VIP.EXE <DRIVE LETTER>\MEGA93\MEGA93.SDW
(Example: C:\MEGA93\VIP.EXE C:\MEGA93\MEGA93.SDW)
You will need to also set the STARTUP DIRECTORY TO:
<CD-ROM DRIVE LETTER>:\HSCRT
(Example: E:\HSCRT)
KNOWN ISSUES (1-16-95)
------------
*******Fatal Error at Script Line 0. or any Script Line********
Explanation: Corel ships their own version of MSCDEX.EXE called CORELCDX.EXE.
Novell DOS 7 uses a similar driver called NWCDEX.EXE. These versions may create
software conflicts and Corel has a newer bug fix version available on their BBS.
Another possible way to correct this driver problem is for you to load the version of
MSCDEX.EXE that works with the version of DOS you are using (DOS 6.0 or later is
located in the DOS subdirectory). Also, the driver is available from Microsoft's
BBS: 1-206-637-9009 or CompuServe.
Solution:
1) Open your AUTOEXEC.BAT file in your root directory on your boot drive using EDIT
in DOS, or NotePad in Windows (i.e. EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT). Then Make a duplicate
of the line with CORELCDX and type rem at the beginning of the original line.
For example:
REM C:\COREL\CORELCDX /V /D:MSCD001
C:\COREL\CORELCDX /V /D:MSCD001
2) Next change the new line to read C:\DOS\MSCDEX /M:8 /E leaving the "/D:"
parameter the same as the orignal line. For example:
REM C:\COREL\CORELCDX /V /D:MSCD001
C:\DOS\MSCDEX /M:8 /E /D:MSCD001
*******Program locks up after clicking on the icon.*******
Explanation: The program cannot locate the temporary directory assigned,
or it doesn't exist.
Solution:
1) At a DOS prompt (C:>) type "MD C:\WINDOWS\TEMP"
2) Type "EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT<enter>"
3) Find a line that says "SET TEMP=..." and change it to say
"SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP"
4) Press Alt+F then X to exit and save the file.
5) Reboot your computer for the changes to take effect and run the program.
*****Program kicks you out to DOS; Insufficient memory to run program; "Shadow
caused a General Protection Fault..."******
Explanation: The program wasn't allocated enough memory to run.
Solution:
1) Edit your C:\WINDOWS\VIP.INI file using the DOS' EDIT or Windows' NOTEPAD.
2) Page down to the section [Settings] and add the following lines below it by
pressing <enter> at the end of the [Settings] line and typing the following:
[Settings]
Server Memory=1024 ;for computers with 4 MB Ram, 2048 for 8 MB or more.
Server Disk=10000 ;for computers with more than 100 MB free on
;the hard drive. 5000 for less than 100 MB free.
3) Press Alt+F then X to exit and save the file. Double click on the program icon
to start the program.
Note: You must have 520 KB of conventional memory free when starting Windows. To
check this, at the DOS prompt (C:>) type MEM<enter> and check the largest executable
size. Refer to DOS or Windows manual for ways to increase available conventional
memory.
VIDEO DISPLAY
-------------
* THE MEGA MOVIE GUIDE was created to be displayed on a 640x480 resolution
VGA color monitor. The video clips will display best in a 256 color
(8 bit) mode. If you experience display problems and you have a video card
capable of displaying 256 colors, open Windows Setup, choose the Options
command, and select a 640x480, 256-color driver.
You can still view video clips on a 16 color (4 bit) 640x480
graphics display card/monitor, but the video may appear slightly
grainy due to the lower color display.
* The MAIN SCREEN buttons (MEGA MOVIE TUTORIAL, ABOUT INFOBUSINESS, etc.)
were created for a window that is maximized. If you minimize
the window (or attempt to resize it) the buttons may wrap and look
out of alignment. FOR BEST RESULTS LEAVE THE MEGA MOVIE WINDOWS
MAXIMIZED.
* Some graphics applications (Adobe Photoshop(TM), etc.)
may interfere with the color display of THE MEGA MOVIE GUIDE. If you
encounter problems, try exiting the graphics application, restart
THE MEGA MOVIE GUIDE, or try restarting Windows.
* If the Video Clips or Movie Stills appear too dark, try adjusting the
brightness and contrast knobs on your monitor.
* Be sure to have the latest video driver from your video card manufacturer.
Contact your manufacturer for the latest update.
AUDIO TRACK ON VIDEO CLIPS
--------------------------
* The audio on this CD-ROM requires an 8 bit sound card capable
of playing .WAV files (Creative Labs Sound Blaster(TM), etc.) with
audio speakers or headphones connected to the sound card jacks--not
to the CD-ROM drive audio jacks.
* Be sure the volume control on your sound card is turned up (both the
physical knob on the board and any software driven volume controls--see
your sound board documentation for details)
* For optimal audio playback, an MPC compatible CD-ROM drive is required (a
CD-ROM capable of sustaining a 150K/second transfer rate and a maximum
seek time of 1 second while using no more than 40% of the CPU's
processing power.) Without a CD-ROM that maintains these rates the audio
clips may sound choppy or may not play at all.
* If you have a sound board and meet the above sound requirements but you
are still unable to hear any sound, contact your sound board manufacturer
to verify that you have the correct drivers and that there are no other
conflicts.
VIDEO CLIPS
-----------
* Video clips appear optimally when played on a video card capable of
256 colors (see above VIDEO DISPLAY section)
* For optimal video clip playback, an MPC compatible CD-ROM drive is
required (a CD-ROM capable of sustaining a 150K/second transfer rate and
a maximum seek time of 1 second while using no more than 40% of the CPU's
processing power.) Without a CD-ROM that maintains these rates the video
clips may appear choppy or may not play at all.
* Most problems that occur when playing video clips are related to the version
of the video driver on your machine. Open the Windows Setup in the Main
group, change the display driver to VGA (write down your current settings)
If a video clip plays fine in the Mega Movie using the VGA driver, contact
your video card manufacturer to see if they have more recent drivers. (Most
drivers are updated every couple of months). You can also check to see if a
video plays by using the Media Player (mplayer.exe) in the Accessories group
* If you have difficulty installing Video for Windows 1.1d, close down all
other applications that are running in the background. In the Program Manager]
pull-down the HELP menu and click on About Program Manager. Check System
Resources and Memory. System Resources should be close to 80%.
TUTORIAL
--------
* When using the MEGA MOVIE TUTORIAL, if you escape out of the tutorial by
using CTRL+ESC you will have to return to the tutorial by minimizing all
of the applications on top of the tutorial window.
* If you want to exit a Tutorial section while it is in progress you will
have to press CTRL+BREAK until you are back at the Main Tutorial Screen.
DOUBLE CLICKING/SINGLE CLICKING
-------------------------------
* In some instances when you double click on a button (video buttons,
tutorial, etc.), it may take a moment to complete the button function
(loading a video clip, etc.) If you continue clicking on the button
(after double clicking the first time) an error message may appear. Click
OK to continue and the video or audio will play. To avoid this problem
watch your CD player's busy light after double clicking the button to
ensure you have successfully double clicked. (The speed of your CD-ROM
drive determines how long this will take.)
* The six buttons at the THE MEGA MOVIE GUIDE MAIN SCREEN (MEGA TUTORIAL,
ABOUT INFOBUSINESS, etc.) require that you double click your mouse
on them. Hot words (text that pops up or that jumps you to another
section) require double clicks also.
* The Button Bar (EXIT, PRINT, QUERY, etc.) at the top of the screen
and the buttons in the Tutorial require single clicks.
SEARCHING
---------
* To search in a specific section of the CD-ROM, click the query button,
pull down the scope menu, select field, double click on one of the
options (actor, title, etc.), and place the cursor in the
query box between the colon and the end bracket.
You may then type in your search.
* After a Query you can go to the TOC (Table of Contents) to see a list.
The sections that are expandable will have a plus (+) sign in front of
them, indicating that there are search hits. Double click on the plus
sign to expand the list of hits (This may take a moment, depending on the
speed of your CD-ROM drive and the number of hits.) DO NOT CONTINUE
DOUBLE CLICKING. Watch your CD-ROM light to ensure that you have double
clicked correctly and the list should expand after a moment.
